Stem@Work At S4J

On Thursday, May 5th, S4J Manufacturing had the pleasure of hosting Cape Coral’s Mariner High School for a STEM@Work event. This is a project of the Foundation for Lee County Public Schools to provide  “students the opportunity to participate in field trips and internships, as well as experience hands-on activities through partnerships with businesses in the community” in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and math.

Doug Gyure, president of S4J, began the program with a video from FLATE (Florida Advanced Technological Education Center), showcasing the varied products manufactured in the State of Florida and the plethora of careers available in the manufacturing sector.

After a brief history of the company, Doug led a tour of the facility, describing the various machines including a robot, the materials used in S4J’s manufacturing and the recycling program for the company. He encouraged the students to spend some time with his employees to ask questions about their positions and about manufacturing careers in general. After a tour of the plating room and a discussion of the science behind electroless nickel plating, the students met with the quality manager to discuss the statistics used in quality control. Using one of the measuring devices, the students were treated to an up close magnification of an insect, which the students found fun, if not a little scary!

Finally, while partaking in a pizza lunch, small groups of students were brought out to a workstation where they each were given a different drawing of a part and asked to use measuring equipment to identify the part from a group of parts on a table. The students seemed to really enjoy this hands-on experience.

S4J Manufacturing is happy to participate in STEM@Work events and looks forward to a continuing relationship with the Foundation for Lee County Public Schools.
